I hear Putin, at least ten years before that, stating that Ukraine was their redline with NATO. We, the U.S. promised Russia in the Minsk accords that Ukraine would never be allowed to join NATO. But in 2014 the word was that Ukraine was going to be admitted to the organization. Not only that, there is a huge Nazi problem in Ukraine. Russia will never allow a Nazi country again after losing millions and millions of their people to Germany. Putin was not going to allow Ukraine to become part of Nato either. Then, add the fact that Ukraine was murdering ethnically Russian Ukrainians and those straws broke the camel's back.
J.F.K. did not allow Russia to maintain nukes in Cuba and we were on the brink of WWIII during the Cuban Missile Crisis. It came extremely close to war.
