New videos show the split-second decision Phoenix police officers had to make when they opened fire on a man who pointed a gun at them in an alley near downtown two weeks ago.
Police were looking for the man, who was wanted by Tolleson police because he reportedly pointed a gun at officers while they were trying to arrest him on felony warrants.
Police said they found him around 10 a.m. on April 29 at a parking lot near Fifth Avenue and McDowell Road. He parked his car and walked into a nearby alley.
Surveillance video showed the man walking near a cement wall and pointing a gun at a victim while officers were nearby. He pointed his handgun a second time.
Body camera video showed a Phoenix officer getting out of his truck and, within five seconds, fired three times after the man raised his gun.
A second body camera showed another officer firing his rifle after getting out of a van.
“Hey! Hey, drop the gun! Drop it! Drop the gun,” the officer said after the shooting.
Another officer used a 36 mm less-lethal baton launcher on the man because he was still holding onto the gun.
The man was taken to the hospital, where he later died. His name has not been released.
No police officers were hurt.
The two officers who shot the man are assigned to the special assignments unit and have worked for the department for nine and 17 years.
