Early Sunday a Cedartown officer assisting a missing-child search entered a Polk County pasture and fatally shot the family's 1-year-old miniature donkey HeeHaw after it approached braying. Owner says it was tased first. Officer on leave; investigation with GA Dept of Agriculture LE. Child later found safe.

If you don't have no trespassing signs the poser cops will end up in your backyard with a shit excuse for it. Happened to me. If you have the signs you can arrest them with as much force as necessary to effect the arrest.

Armed cops (or anyone for that matter) trespassing around midnight, without lawful reason, especially if they knew they were trespassing: is either a misdemeanor or a potential felony. However - despite more likely in the wrong from the start, unless having a lawful reason, and/or the circumstances prove otherwise - the actual shooting of the donkey might be justified. Just because it is a more than beloved pet, animals are still capable of attacking people. Even more. And strangers at night won't stand a chance. And donkeys are the RULE in capitals, not the exception looking into this matter. Can be quite territorial..

The owner thinks the donkey was about to greet the late guests. However charging from the deepest dark, while hee-hawing; would make anyone run, or if no time, and have one, reach to a weapon.

@Theocritus I don't recall the info about this being a missing child case, added to the description after I've commented. And that makes the cops actions lawful. Imagine it's around midnight, darkest hour of the day, out on the fields (even if near a house, maybe with lights, perhaps signs of residents awake), searching for a lost child, and then a larger than 99% of dogs animal "greets" you. I admit, I would have felt threatened too. Donkeys can bite deep and nasty, persistent creatures..

Many might see their pets as a welcoming, warmhearted, innocent balls of fur. Not realizing those "pets" can go frenzy in seconds; and even if not, why should others trust the owners sentiments?

Unfortunate. Sad that happened. No tears for the donkey though. It is way more important that the child is found.
