US President Donald Trump told several Latin American leaders that Cuba “is in its last moments of life”, in comments made on Saturday during a summit at his Trump National Doral Miami golf resort in Florida.

Dubbed “Shield of the Americas”, the summit aimed at coordinating the actions of US and Latin America countries to combat drug cartels.

Cuba “is in its last moments of life the way it is, but our focus right now is on Iran”, Trump said about the Caribbean island under communist rule since 1961.

The US and Israel have been at war against Iran since 28 February. Despite the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on 2 March, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian vowed “no surrender” today.

US forces captured then‑President of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro and his wife in a special forces operation on 3 January. They both face charges of drug conspiracy in front of a New York court.

Trump was talking in front of the leaders of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, and Trinidad and Tobago.
