CINCINNATI - Two people are under arrest after two officers were assaulted while trying to break up a large crowd near the University of Cincinnati over Halloween weekend, the police union leader confirmed.
Police said they were called to Short Vine Street in Corryville around 11 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports there was a large crowd gathered yelling about something near UC during a “Halloweekend” event.
One of the officers was treated at the scene and another needed stitches and had some “bruises and bumps,” said FOP President Ken Kober said Monday.
The officers were attacked while responding to a crowd near the BP gas station, he confirmed. CPD’s civil disturbance response team and other police were also called to the scene.
Videos and photos posted online show at least one officer being assaulted as police broke up crowds near the gas station. Some people also are seen standing on top of fuel pumps.
About 10 minutes before police were called to Short Vine Street, police also responded to reports of shots fired in the 800 block of East University Avenue, according to emergency communication reports.
“We are extremely grateful to the officers for the sacrifices they made to keep people safe during an especially challenging weekend. I am praying for a speedy recovery,” Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval said.
“I unequivocally condemn the attack on two Cincinnati police officers on Short Vine Street Saturday night — an appalling act of violence against those who put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe,” City Councilman Mark Jeffreys said.
“My thoughts are with these officers and their families, and we must stand united in making clear that violence against those who serve and protect our city will never be tolerated.“
