Batavia, OH - A Clermont County corrections officer was arraigned Wednesday for allegedly assaulting an inmate. Matthew Mullenix pleaded not guilty to two counts of felonious assault.
On July 7, Mullenix went into the cell of an inmate who had a shirt wrapped around his neck. Once inside the cell, the shirt was quickly removed. The inmate was taken to the hospital where it was discovered he had injuries unrelated to the inmate reportedly trying to hang himself.
In court, an assistant prosecutor said the inmate suffered at least six rib fractures and needed 23 staples to close a head wound.
Body cam video also shows the incident. The inmate is blurred out, but blood can be seen on him and the floor.
Mullenix was placed on administrative leave.
It was ultimately determined that the force used by Mullenix was unnecessary, unreasonable, and inconsistent with department policy and the law, according to Tekulve.
