Bodycam video shows Corona officer fatally shooting man armed with knife

Corona police released body-worn camera footage showing the moments before an officer fatally shot a 25-year-old man who authorities said attacked an elderly woman with a rock and later advanced toward the officer with a knife in July.
The newly released community incident debrief identifies the man killed in the July 17 shooting as Isaiah Masiel, 25, of Corona, and includes 911 calls from witnesses, a photograph of the injured woman and footage from the officer who shot him.
Police were called around 6:30 a.m. to East Parkridge Avenue after witnesses reported Masiel had attacked the woman with a rock. One caller told a dispatcher he had picked up the injured woman and was watching Masiel from a distance as he walked through the area.
Another caller reported that Masiel followed her as she walked her dog and had a long knife in a sheath on his belt. She told the dispatcher that Masiel took out the knife at one point but did not threaten her with it.
The debrief video also includes a photograph of the woman following the attack, showing extensive bruising.
An officer arrived within about three minutes. Body-worn camera footage shows the officer approaching Masiel and repeatedly ordering him to sit down. Masiel refuses and pushes over the officer’s police motorcycle.
The officer draws his gun and begins backing away while calling for additional officers, the footage shows. Masiel moves toward the officer as the officer continues retreating and repeatedly tells him to stop.
Masiel tells the officer to shoot him as he continues moving toward him, according to the footage, and then pulls out a large knife.
The footage shows Masiel moving toward a car, where police said the woman and the witness were, while holding the knife before the car speeds away. Masiel then turns back toward the officer with the knife raised and moves toward him as the officer continues backing away and ordering him to stop.
The officer then fires several rounds. Police said Masiel was struck once, and was declared dead at the scene.
Police said the officer had retreated about 100 feet during the encounter.
The officer, whose name was not released in the video, has been a sworn officer for seven years and is assigned to the department’s Traffic Bureau.
The Riverside County Force Investigation Detail is leading the investigation into the shooting.
