Officer Found Justified in the Use of Force in a Deadly Shooting

The Illinois State Police (ISP) is releasing video of an officer involved shooting incident after being requested by the Peoria Police Department to conduct an investigation.
On May 8, 2026, at approximately 6:45 p.m., Peoria Police Department (PPD) officers responded to a report of a domestic dispute near the intersection of Hamilton and Madison streets in Peoria.
As an officer approached the suspect, the suspect, 41-year-old Cortez Lamarr White of St. Louis, MO, shot and killed the woman standing in front of him, 42-year-old Ashley N. Stenson of Lithonia, GA (formerly Peoria, IL). As the PPD officer immediately moved to take White into custody, White ran and shots were fired. White was struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The officer was not injured.
