Greenville police controversy: woman handcuffed after refusing to hand over ring video — now two people face attempted murder charges in the shooting police were investigating.
This story just got another major development.
On August 18, Greenville Police were investigating a shots-fired call at an apartment complex on Moseley Drive. Police say bullets were fired into an apartment occupied by four people, including two children. No one was struck, but WITN reports bullets went through the apartment and into a couch where two children were sleeping.
While investigating, officers went to a neighboring apartment belonging to Uniquea Teel because they wanted to see whether her Ring doorbell had captured anything.
It was around 3:30 in the morning.
Teel told officers her Ring camera was nearly dead and wasn't recording. According to the Ring footage and Teel's account, she was repeatedly asked to provide the video.
At one point, the female officer seen in the footage — identified in reporting as Sgt. Jennifer Umphlet — told Teel that she could have simply shown officers her phone to prove the camera wasn't recording.
Instead, the encounter escalated.
Teel was placed in handcuffs.
She told officers she had been asleep, had to work at 6 a.m., and didn't understand why she was being treated as though she was involved in the shooting.
According to Teel, officers then entered her apartment and took her phone from her bedroom while her 1-year-old daughter was asleep. She says the phone was held up to her face so it could be unlocked while she was still handcuffed.
Officers searched the phone looking for the video but reportedly did not find what they were looking for. Teel says she was then uncuffed and the officers left.
She later told WITN that the experience traumatized both her and her daughter and left her afraid of Greenville police.
The Greenville Police Department launched an internal affairs investigation into the encounter. Police said they had not received a formal complaint at the time but were taking the concerns seriously. The primary officer involved was placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.
A criminal defense attorney who reviewed the footage told WITN that, in his opinion, the encounter may have violated Teel's Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures. That is an attorney's assessment — the internal investigation has not reached a final finding of misconduct.
And now we know more about the shooting that started the entire investigation.
On Monday, Greenville Police arrested Juquan Mosley and Laniya Battle.
Both are accused of shooting into the apartment occupied by four people, including two children.
They are charged with:
Attempted first-degree murder
Three counts of discharging a weapon into occupied property
Mosley is also charged with misdemeanor stalking. Warrants allege he repeatedly called, texted, messaged and showed up at the apartment of a woman who lived there.
Police say no one was hit by the gunfire, but the bullets entered the apartment and reached the couch where two children were sleeping.
Both suspects were taken to the Pitt County Jail without bond and were scheduled for a court appearance today. These are allegations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
So there are really two separate questions here:

Sounds like the butch dyke looking female officer will be out of a job soon. 
Female officer, Jennifer Umphlet, has been suspended, pending the investigation. Umphlet was previously investigated for her use of force during an arrest in February 2025 at a Greenville McDonald’s.
