The chips are mainly RFID, Radio Frequency Identification, chips being embedded into the labels
If you look closely or hold the labels up to light you can clearly see the chip, not all labels have them but many retailers are using them
RFID chips are used in many huge retailers in America for
- Inventory tracking
- Self-checkout, you place items in a bin and the system reads all tags automatically
- Anti-theft and security
They contain a microchip and antenna but are not “tracking microchips” however I’d still recommend removing them
They’ve been out for years but are being used by more and more major retailers so people are staying to notice

I read years ago about how they were using RFID chips in packaging, so they can scan boxes faster.
Just wait, they'll be scanning litter on the highways, and sending people a ticket, and scanning peoples trash to make sure they're recycling properly.
Mr. Smith, our waste analysis shows that you put recyclable cardboard in with your regular trash. Here's a $250 fine.

Yep, real and they have put them in shirt tags for decades. The scanner at the front entrance of most stores is not just for theft prevention, it can scan your credit cards and these tags. If you don't want to cut the tag, just put it on a hard surface, preferably smooth steel like a vise or anvil and give the tag a smack with a hammer. medium hard.
