@ScreaminMime nope, not legal to take someone's personal property just because their card declined. That's borderline extortion and at the very least theft. They should've called the police for service theft and banned her from the building if she was truly not going to pay. How is she supposed to call anyone (including her credit card company) to help her pay if she doesn't have her phone? So dumb.

If she was smart, she would have said she needed her phone to pay, and when they wouldn't, she should've walked outside, used her boyfriend's phone to call the police.
Takes time for them to respond, but the employee who took her phone could have been charged with theft.

Then struck a deal with them after the cops came.
