TUCSON, Ariz. - A shooting at Park Place Mall on Wednesday night has left the Tucson community shaken. As of now, the Tucson Police Department reports that the suspect is still at large, leaving a lingering sense of unease among those who were present.
Police say the incident began as a fight between kids. Although the mall has since reopened, many who were there are hesitant to return. Paige Stewart, who was in the mall with her mother and 5-year-old daughter, shared her experience.
"This is the mall I grew up going up— it doesn’t happen here— then it does," Stewart said.
She described the frightening moment when gunshots rang out near the crowded food court and children’s playground.
"Just heard it was like six or seven gunshots that went off," Stewart said.
The family, along with others, took shelter in a bathroom for over an hour.
"I shoved my five year old against the wall and put myself over her," Stewart said.
Two individuals were taken to the hospital following the shooting. The Tucson Police Department emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "This type of violence in a public space is deeply concerning." They say the shooting appears to be isolated.
As the mall's parking lot fills up and shoppers return, Stewart reflects on the traumatic event.
"I genuinely in the moment was worried we weren’t gonna make it out," Stewart said. "I was thinking we aren’t going make it out of here."
In response to the incident, Park Place Mall released a statement to News 4 Tucson, saying, "Our guests, employees, and community's safety remain our top priority. Thank you to the Tucson Police Department for their swift response to yesterday's incident."
Throughout the day, increased security measures have been observed, with mall security making rounds outside and Tucson police patrolling inside. The Tucson Police Department's shootings investigation unit is actively working on the case.
