Suspect Armed With Knives Shot By Los Angeles Officers

Los Angeles, California — On May 16, 2026, at around 1:45 a.m., Los Angeles Police Officers from the Hollenbeck Patrol Division responded to a radio call of an Assault with a Weapon in progress at a residence in the 3000 block Glenn Avenue. Upon arrival, the officers were met by a family member of the suspect outside of the suspect’s residence. While officers were conducting their investigation, the suspect, later identified as 40-year-old Robert Velasquez, emerged from the residence with two knives and a grilling fork. The officers gave verbal commands to Velasquez to drop the weapons, but he did not comply. Velasquez threw one of the knives in the officers’ direction and while still armed with one knife and the grilling fork, an Officer-Involved Shooting occurred. Velasquez fell to the ground momentarily and began to get back up to his feet, still holding the knife and grilling fork resulting in a second Officer-Involved Shooting. Velasquez was struck by gunfire, collapsed onto the ground, but refused to submit to arrest. Velasquez sat up and began moving toward the front door of the residence resulting in the use of an intermediate force option. The intermediate force option was successful, and Velasquez was taken into custody. The officers rendered medical aid until the arrival of Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics. Los Angeles Fire Department personnel arrived at scene and transported Velasquez to a local hospital for medical treatment. Two knives and a grilling fork were recovered at the scene and booked as evidence. No community members or officers were injured during this incident.

Hundreds of people were spotted riding without clothes for the World Naked Bike Ride. LAPD says a man dressed in all black riding a scooter started shooting the cyclists with a BB gun. Two people were hit and treated for lacerations. The man was taken into custody.

Los Angeles, California — On May 5, 2026, at around 12:44 p.m., Mission Patrol Division uniformed officers responded to an additional unit request from Mission Area Narcotics Enforcement Detail (NED) officers who observed a suspect, later identified as 21-year-old Jason Vega, wanted for outstanding warrants. When the officers contacted Vega, he fled on foot, onto the embankment of the eastbound 210 Freeway. Vega then ran across the 210 freeway where he attempted to carjack a pickup truck that was travelling west on the freeway. The officers again contacted Vega, who was observed to be armed with a handgun. Numerous commands were given to Vega to drop the firearm, which he refused to comply with, resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting. Vega fell to the ground, disregarded officer’s commands, and moved toward his firearm. The officers used an intermediate force option to gain compliance from Vega and he was taken into custody. Vega was transported by rescue ambulance to Olive View Medical Center, where he was treated and medically cleared for booking. A Glock handgun, Model 22, 40-caliber was recovered at the scene and booked as evidence. No community members or officers were injured as a result of this incident.

Dozens of drivers were left without their vehicles after LAPD officers impounded 72 cars and issued trespassing citations during a large car meetup inside the Los Angeles River near Cypress Park. Police say the Street Racing Task Force responded to the gathering Sunday evening and found more than 100 vehicles inside the river channel. Authorities have not described the event as a street race or takeover, but said participants were trespassing. Drivers at the scene claimed the event was organized as a photo shoot for the local car community.

A man whom the Los Angeles Police Department believes was responsible for another shooting was fatally shot by officers in the Westmont neighborhood on Friday morning.

The LAPD said they responded to a radio call of a shooting in the 1100 block of Vermont Avenue around 1 a.m. Comments from the radio call said a man had shot another man and the suspect had fled west on Imperial Avenue.

Police requested additional units in the area. Responding officers found the suspect allegedly armed with a handgun.

The LAPD said officers gave the suspect multiple commands, but he refused to comply, and the suspect was struck by police gunfire.

Paramedics from the LA County Fire Department responded to the scene and pronounced the suspect dead. He was later identified by LAPD officers as 45-year-old Eliar Real Hernandez.

Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department opened fire on a suspect while responding to a robbery call late Saturday night. According to the LAPD Public Information Officer, units were called out to a convenience store at the corner of Redondo Beach Boulevard and Figueroa Street, located on the border of the West Rancho Dominguez and Harbor Gateway neighborhoods, for a reported robbery at 11:10 p.m. The store in question, a 7-Eleven, has its address listed as Gardena. “Upon arrival, officers saw the suspect behind the counter,” the PIO stated on social media early Sunday morning. “Officers attempted to communicate with the suspect, [who] retrieved what appeared to be a firearm and an officer-involved shooting occurred. The suspect was struck by gunfire and pronounced deceased at the scene.”

On January 27, 2026, Northeast Division officers spotted Christina Stewart topless on the roof of a recreational vehicle near Avenue 28 south of Pepper Avenue. She came down, was told to put on a shirt, and was questioned about RV ownership. Witnesses said the homeless woman appeared to be trying to break in. As Stewart walked away, officers attempted to detain her. When the officer approached, Stewart hit the officer in the mouth and was taken to the ground, where she broke her arm. Stewart was taken into custody and hospitalized with a fractured left arm. The officer had a minor lip injury and was treated on scene. She was booked for resisting an executive officer.
