Newport, RI - Newport police released officer bodycam footage of a deadly shootout on a stolen sailboat earlier this year.
The suspect was shot and killed, and an officer was hurt.
The harbormaster tipped off police when the boat sailed into Newport on Aug. 26.
The bodycam footage and surveillance video shows officers speeding up to the vessel at about 9 a.m.
"The harbormaster had observed the anchored vessel's name had been scraped from the stern, but the approximately 40-foot sailboat was a distinct model matching the reported stolen vessel," Police Chief Ryan Duffy said in a recorded briefing that included the video.
Officers drew their guns as they closed in on the boat.
Police say 27-year-old Brendan Norris had the boat's engine running and appeared to lift the anchor, before dipping below deck.
Authorities said Norris fired the first shot, before police returned fire, shooting him in the head.
Norris was killed, and an officer was hit with shrapnel -- a bullet grazing his leg.
