Carencro, LA - A deputy with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office is being credited with saving an 8-year-old nonspeaking child with autism who went underwater in a Carencro pond.
Authorities reported deputies responded to an area on Blushing Groom Drive in unincorporated Carencro after the child was reported missing on Sunday, Sept. 6.
They said that while deputies were on their way, they learned the child had been found but had wandered into a nearby pond.
They explained that when deputies arrived, bystanders were standing along the bank as the child went underwater, and Cpl. Jared Havard recognized the danger, so he entered the neck-deep water in his full duty uniform to reach her.
They added Havard reached the child and brought her safely back to the bank, where she was reunited with her family.
