San Antonio, TX - The San Antonio Police Department released body-worn camera footage of an officer shooting and killing a man armed with two knives on the Northwest Side.
Gregory Boaz, 56, was fatally shot by SAPD officer Rafael Perez on Aug. 16.
Shortly before midnight, officers were dispatched to the 6700 block of Spring Front Drive for a disturbance involving a gun.
Upon arrival, the video shows a woman, who said she was Boaz’s girlfriend, telling Perez that Boaz had “too much” of his medication.
“He’s having a lot of hallucinations,” the woman told Perez. “He scared me to death; he woke me up.”
Perez asked the woman if there were any weapons in the house, and she said no. The woman also told Perez no one else was in the house.
As Perez walked toward the home with the woman, she told Perez that Boaz had two knives.
The footage shows Boaz coming out from the back of the house and starting to run toward Perez.
“Hey, sir, backup, backup,” Perez yelled to Boaz.
In the footage, Boaz stops running, turns around, and faces the direction he came from.
“Hey, put the knife down now,” Perez said. “That’s an animal. Put the knife down. Sir.”
The video shows Boaz, who was still facing away from Perez, pointing one of the knives from where he came from.
Boaz begins to run toward Perez. After Perez gave Boaz several commands to back up, he shot Boaz about four times, the video shows.
Perez is then seen in the video announcing on his radio, “shots fired.”
Boaz was later pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
