A man was arrested in Sumter County on Tuesday after crashing his vehicle into a school bus that was transporting 19 kids, authorities say.
According to an arrest report, at 7:20 a.m., a Sumter County Sheriff’s deputy was on patrol when they saw a black Nissan Sentra with a Maryland tag number traveling west at a high speed through a posted 20 mph school zone.
The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the Nissan appeared to speed up and began weaving dangerously through traffic, the report said.
A short time later, the Nissan collided with two vehicles that were stopped at a red light. The report said that the Nissan became wedged between the two vehicles and continued moving forward. The Nissan then veered to the right and collided head-on with a Sumter County school bus.
Following the collission, the report states that the driver of the Nissan fled the area on foot toward a nearby Walmart.
Video taken from the school bus and an additional body camera video show the crash and arrest as officers chased the driver, who was shirtless during the incident, toward the Walmart.
“Why would you run, man?” the officer asked the suspect before placing him in handcuffs. “Why would you run?”
The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office arrested the driver, identified as 23-year-old Qahiem Williams. They have charged him with fleeing law enforcement, driving with a suspended license, possession of marijuana and fleeing the scene of a crash.
