Irvine police officers fatally shot an Autistic man armed with a knife after he called 911 on himself

Irvine, CA - A 20-year-old man fatally shot by Irvine police during a mental health crisis has been identified as Daniel Alfons Meltvedt of Irvine, authorities announced.
Meltvedt called the Irvine Police Department on the afternoon of July 21 and said he was armed with a knife, wanted to harm himself and might harm others, according to an updated account from the department.
Police said Meltvedt then left his home carrying a knife and walked onto Sungate near Silkwood.
Members of the department’s Crisis Negotiation Team responded and spoke with Meltvedt for more than an hour, repeatedly urging him to put down the knife and surrender so he could receive care.
Police said Meltvedt eventually charged toward an officer with the knife raised, prompting the officer to open fire.
Officers provided medical aid before Meltvedt was taken to a hospital, where he died.
The department said officers had previously responded to several mental health-related incidents involving Meltvedt and connected him with mental health resources after each encounter.
Since 2025, Meltvedt had also received follow-up services from Irvine’s Community Alternative Response and Engagement Team, known as I-CARE, which is made up of unarmed crisis intervention specialists, police said.
I-CARE personnel and Orange County Fire Authority crews were standing by during negotiations to provide medical and mental health assistance

Effective. Never rely on melee weapons against ranged ballistic projectiles.

If that's autistic it's very high functioning. I got a nephew that can barely talk.

idk why people like police body cam footage so much! half the time there’s too much context and not enough visible violence
