Big insurance companies have ruined our healthcare in America
- Labor and delivery room 1 night: $3,200
- Postpartum room 1 night: $3,200
- Pitocin 3 bags: $1,179
- IV fluids saline bag: $90
- Zofran: $128
- Epidural medication: $158
- Lidocaine with epinephrine + Fentanyl): $560
- Random medicine: $136
- Lidocaine with epinephrine: $134
- Fentanyl: $134
- Foley catheter insertion: $472
- Vaginal Delivery charge facility fee: $9,993
- Ibuprofen: $28 each
- Prenatal vitamin: $28
- Iron : $28
Original hospital bill total: Well over $20,000, insurance negotiated down
Physician OB Charges:
- OB for vaginal birth after C-section: $6,185 (The doctor was present for 3 minutes)
This was her 2nd birth
She also had another birth that was a C-Section that cost a flat $32,000
Keep in mind before big insurance companies got involved and healthcare became about profit, it only cost about $300 or so to give both in America during the 60s and 70s. People didn’t buy health insurance they just paid cash
Sweden birth cost: The parking fee, about $12 per 24 hours
Acctual cost covered by taxes. 33% of your paycheck is tax. The employer also forks over 45% to the state, onto of your salary. I prefer the European version.
Specifically the problem is 3rd Party Payer. If the customer is not directly paying for services, and there's this 3rd party that pays (health insurance company/government) they have much less incentive to keep prices down because they don't have an irate customer in their face.
Also, half of the people are getting their healthcare for free, so the half that do pay are getting soaked.
It's not "big insurance companies" it's government laws and regulations that make it so you don't buy healthcare from a doctor like you buy food from the store.
Insurance companies, really? Its the same people that ruin everything, school, religion, energy, water, food, the home, healthcare, etc…..
Solved this problem decades ago, implementation the only problem. A non- profit publicly owned co-op all incompassing insurance. Basically an escrow account.
