Azusa, CA - A man armed with a knife was shot by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies Wednesday afternoon after authorities say he charged toward a deputy during a confrontation in the Azusa area.
The deputy-involved shooting happened around 3:30 p.m. in the 5500 block of North Orangecrest Avenue in an unincorporated area near Azusa, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities said deputies from the San Dimas Sheriff’s Station responded to reports of an attempted suicide call where a man was harming himself with a knife.
When deputies arrived, the man allegedly exited a side gate of the residence while armed and refused repeated commands to surrender the weapon, investigators said.
The man then allegedly charged toward the nearest deputy, who was standing near a patrol vehicle, prompting the deputy to open fire.
Deputies and firefighters rendered aid at the scene before the man was transported to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, authorities said.
Investigators recovered a knife with an approximately 3-inch blade at the scene.
No deputies were injured in the incident.
