Kansas City, MO - The Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) has released video footage of a police chase where a homicide suspect fired multiple shots at a MSHP trooper.
On Monday, MSHP released bodycam footage of a police chase that took place in early May. In the video, multiple bullet holes can be seen piercing the side of MSHP Corporal Brandon Harris’ patrol vehicle.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a call just after 1:15 p.m. on May 7, in the area of North Douglas Drive in Columbia, Missouri, from a woman who’d claimed that both her and her son had been shot.
Upon arrival, deputies located a 65-year-old woman who was severely injured as well as her 35-year-old son who was pronounced dead at the scene.
After receiving a description of the suspect, later identified as Steven Swanson, and the car he left the scene in, a Boone County deputy spotted the suspect traveling westbound on Mexico Gravel Road towards Woodard Drive.
The sheriff’s office, along with the assistance of MSHP troopers and officers with the Columbia Police Department, began pursuing the suspect vehicle on U.S. Highway 63, according to the sheriff’s office.
During the pursuit, Swanson fired multiple rounds at Corporal Harris’ patrol vehicle. Corporal Harris and other law enforcement were unharmed during the shooting, according to police reports.
Law enforcement used deflation devices to flatten the tires of Swanson’s vehicle before Corporal Harris performed a “Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI).”
Swanson lost control of the car before it came to a stop in a ditch off the side of the highway.
Troopers approached the vehicle and were able to gain entry where they found Swanson inside, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police reports.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the assault of the 65-year-old woman and killing of her son.
