A police officer and a suspect were shot after a pursuit of a reported stolen vehicle ended in gunfire in Boyle Heights Tuesday afternoon, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Both the suspect and officer were transported to the hospital in unknown condition.
The suspect took off running after the pickup truck crashed following a chase, and that’s when officers reportedly opened fire, hitting and injuring the suspect.
Sky5’s Gil Leyvas was over the termination of the chase at 1173 S Marietta St. at approximately 2:15 p.m., where the man could be seen lying on the ground, moving, before officers moved in and took the man into custody.
The suspect was loaded into an ambulance and was transported to a local hospital in unknown condition.
A gun was found nearby at the scene.
The LAPD confirmed that an officer was struck in the gunfire and taken to a local hospital. There’s no word on his condition, but he was seen walking around and talking at the scene before he was transported.
Authorities were reportedly examining his bullet-proof vest at the scene.
LAPD cruisers were seen with bullet holes following the exchange of gunfire.
An investigation into the officer-involved shooting is underway, and the intersection is expected to be shut down for a while.
