WILKINSBURG, Pa. — A man is dead after he was shot by a police officer in Wilkinsburg.
Allegheny County dispatchers said crews were called to the intersection of Ross Avenue and East Swissvale Avenue at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Allegheny County Police Assistant Superintendent Victor Joseph said a Wilkinsburg police officer who was on patrol encountered a man in the area, later identified by the medical examiner as 38-year-old Jonathan Simmons, who displayed a gun.
Joseph said Simmons was told to drop the weapon numerous times, but he did not. The Wilkinsburg officer later shot him in the chest. First responders quickly rendered aid on scene, and then he was taken to a local hospital. At 8:00 p.m., Allegheny County Police said that Simmons had been pronounced dead.
Preliminary information indicates Simmons never fired the gun.
No police officers were injured.
Neighbor who said they have had issues with the victim before.
“Most of the time, he’s quiet. But often, sometimes, having a delusional rage and yelling at things. We’ve called the police a couple of times just with him being in the middle of the street and everything,” that man said.
