A U.S. Coast Guard crew stopped not one, but three suspected drug-smuggling boats in a single operation off the coast of Colombia last week — a move officials say kept tens of millions of dollars’ worth of cocaine from ever reaching the United States.

The crew aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Tahoma intercepted the vessels on May 8, roughly 90 miles from Cartagena. Altogether, authorities say the smugglers were transporting about 6,085 pounds of cocaine, with an estimated street value of nearly $45.8 million.

Coast Guard officials put the impact in stark terms: that amount of cocaine represents roughly 2.3 million potentially deadly doses that will now never make it to American communities.

The takedown unfolded quickly, with the Tahoma deploying two small boats along with a helicopter crew trained specifically for drug interdictions. Working in coordination, the teams said they were able to close in on all three vessels at once — something Coast Guard leaders say is no small feat.

@pastrulo ???? What do you think they’re really doing when they fire their weapons?

If anything, drug prices have fallen in the last 18 months.

The current wholesale price of 1kg of cocaine in Sydney is approximately US$85,000 to US$120,000.

While prices have historically peaked as high as US$260,000 to US$300,000 (roughly AU$400,000–$450,000)
during supply droughts, recent reports indicate a significant market shift.

Pretty good aim from a chopper.

@YOLO_ yea, this technique is more upclose and personal than a reaper strike.

@YOLO_ There's a laser on the side of the rifle, he can see the pipper in his scope.

Turning the engines off. Suppressor built into barrel, maybe a .308?

1 +1 Comfortably_numb 2 months ago

@tommix1 .50 cal?

4 +1 JobyFluorine 2 months ago

@Comfortably_numb What?! No way! The machine gun is an obvious M60, 7.62x51, and the rifle looks like an AR-10. Both of which are .308. A Ma Deuce is huge in comparison to either of these, and a Barrett Fifty is also massive in comparison.

@JobyFluorine It's NOT M60. It is M240. You can tell by the flat boxy receiver top. M60 has rounded receiver top. And M60 has been replaced with M240 a long time ago.

@FacelessMen Yeah, my mistake. I guess I should have watched more of the video before running to the comments section!
