A man wanted for a homicide in Mississippi was killed by a deputy in Florida, according to the Jacksonville Florida Times-Union. The incident happened on May 9 and was recorded on video.
In a May 12 update, the Clay County Sheriff's Office identified the man as 48-year-old Morris Anthony Davis.
The incident began about 4 p.m. when deputies were dispatched to assist the Florida Department of Children and Families in an investigation at an Oakleaf Plantation home on Pebble Stone Court. As they began checking people at the scene for possible warrants, it appeared one of the individuals had an out-of-state warrant, the Sheriff's Office previously said. While deputies were trying to confirm this, the man armed himself with two knives and became confrontational. It carried outside to the backyard where the suspect knocked down a fence into a neighbor's yard.
"In an attempt to disarm Davis, deputies tased him multiple times, which was ineffective," the update said. "Davis was then shot and killed by Deputy D. Brown."
It was later verified the warrant was for a homicide in Mississippi, although details in that case were not released.
In the video obtained by Times-Union news partner First Coast News, the man is seen on the ground after crashing through a backyard fence. Two deputies have him at gunpoint as he's waving a knife and yelling, “Please kill me, I’d rather die than go back to prison." A short time later he was shot and killed.
Neighbors described Davis to First Coast News as a loving grandfather who was deeply involved in the neighborhood and often spent time with children in the area.
“He was a great person, like, my newborn daughters were in his arms,” one neighbor said.
