Minnesota officer fatally shoots man experiencing a mental health crisis

ROCHESTER, Minn. The Rochester Police Department (RPD) has released the body camera footage from a March deadly officer-involved shooting.

On March 11, officers were called to an apartment building on Ashland Dr. NW for a man experiencing a mental health crisis. RPD officers and a social worker from the Crisis Response Team arrived on scene and spoke to the individual.

During the call, officers determined the man posed a threat to both himself and others. Officers then attempted to place him on a 72-hour emergency hold. A struggle ensued after officers attempted to take the man into custody. At one point during the struggle the man grabbed one of the officer’s firearms and it fired. In response, RPD says another officer then fire his gun and shot the man.

The man was brought to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The man has been identified as Cleavon White, 47, of Rochester.

Officer Josiah Duit was placed on critical incident leave. Duit has three years of law enforcement experience.
RPD notes the video is age restricted and viewers must be at least 18-years-old to watch.

The video shows White grabbing an officer’s gun and firing it. An officer can be heard yelling “he is grabbing my gun.” Five gunshots can be heard after.

“This is a deeply tragic incident for everyone involved. Our thoughts are with all those affected,” Police Chief Jim Franklin shared.

The incident remains under investigation by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA). The BCA will present its findings to the Olmsted County Attorney’s Office for review.

Social Worker was useless, and the Cops were careless and needless aggressive. Have to say though this was a CATCH22 situation, no was at fault. Hope everyone (except the dead guy) will learn from this.
