DELTONA, Fla. — A Florida sheriff’s deputy’s body camera played a crucial role in saving his life during a gunfight with a suspect on Monday evening.
Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood emphasized the vital role that the body camera played in the situation, “If you don’t believe in God, you believe in tonight.”
Chitwood held a news conference to share the details of the incident involving Deputy José Rivera and a recently graduated deputy.
Chitwood said that the two deputies were responding to a battery call in Deltona when they confronted the suspect, 31-year-old Luis Diaz Polanco, at a residence.
When Deputies Rivera and Gomez-Lopez knocked on Polanco's door, he initially appeared surprised but then slammed the door in their faces. As they peered through a window, they saw him retrieving a firearm from a box he was carrying. Polanco emerged and opened fire on Deputy Rivera, resulting in a gunfight, Chitwood reported.
It was reported that Deputy Rivera’s body camera absorbed a bullet, which likely saved him from more fatal injuries. Officials say they believe that a bullet struck the camera directly, ricocheted, and hit him in the shoulder.
In addition to the bullet that struck the deputy's body camera, Chitwood reported that another bullet passed through Deputy Rivera's thigh.
It was reported by VSO that Rivera was evacuated safely and later airlifted to a trauma center, where he was reported to be in good spirits.
Chitwood noted that this was the first time he had seen a body camera take a hit and that just six months ago the Sheriff's Office's body cameras were worn on deputies' shoulders and they moved to a new model due to it giving wide-angle coverage, it translates languages, and deputies were more comfortable mounting it on the center of their chest.
The sheriff stressed that the camera provided not only protection but also vital footage that will aid in the investigation of the shooting incident.
