People get this wrong all the time. Age of consent law is set by the individual states, not by the federal government. In the US, 30 states have the age of sexual consent at 16 years old. 7 states have the age of sexual consent at 17 years old. So don't get confused with the notion that legal consent to sexual activity has to be 18 years old everywhere in the US.
