Climbing the Hollywood sign is indeed illegal (it's fenced off, patrolled, and considered trespassing/vandalism - past offenders have faced arrests/fines). However, given the professional filming, TMZ sourcing, and brand tie-in, it's highly likely permitted or coordinated for publicity rather than actual criminal risk.
