Man wanted for murder that occurred just hours before fatally shot by Baltimore cops

Bodycam footage released Wednesday supports statements by Salisbury Police that a man fatally shot by officers in November reached for an object right before gunfire erupted. Video show sofficers confronting David Evans, 40, of Salisbury, on Nov. 2 near a pickup truck in the 700 block of Jefferson Street. Evans was a suspect in the murder of 44-year-old D’Hikiyiah Jones, who had been killed earlier that day. While still classified as Salisbury, the address falls outside of city borders, so the Maryland State Police initially took on the case. They asked Salisbury for help in looking for Evans. Evans raises his hands as officers shout repeated commands to show his hands, get on the ground and walk toward them. He remains standing and does not advance, seemingly confused by the contradictory commands. At one point, an officer says, “you’re not listening,” to which Evans responds, “I am, sir.” In the footage, Evans tells police there is a woman inside the truck. She then exits the vehicle and stands with officers. At 14:16 into the footage, Evans is seen reaching toward the hood of the truck, where police said a handgun was within arm’s reach. It’s unclear from the footage what the item he’s reaching for is. As he reached, officers immediately opened fire. In a statement, Salisbury police said Evans “took hold of the handgun and began to raise and point it at officers,” prompting two officers to fire their handguns and a third to fire a department-authorized rifle. Evans was taken to TidalHealth in Salisbury, where he was pronounced dead
