Los Angeles police on Wednesday shot and killed a man who was violently assaulting his father with scissors at a home in Lake Balboa, authorities said. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers initially responded to the home in the 17200 block of Valerio Street, just east of Louise Avenue, around 8:10 a.m. after receiving a report of a man suffering from a mental health issue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The suspect "was an adult son who had been violent towards family members in the past," the LAPD said in a statement on social media.
Upon arrival at the home, officers "heard a fight coming from inside the residence," the statement said. Police forced their way into the home and "saw the suspect assaulting the victim which resulted in an OIS," police said, using an acronym for an officer-involved shooting.
The suspect was struck by gunfire and detained by officers, who rendered medical aid to him and the victim, who suffered apparent stab wounds, according to authorities.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics arrived and pronounced both the victim and the suspect dead at the scene. The names of the father and son were not immediately released.
Authorities said this was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public.
Investigators recovered a pair of scissors that was used by the suspect during the assault, the LAPD said. No officers or other civilians were injured.
Video from AIR7 showed at least half a dozen patrol vehicles and an LAPD mobile command center at the scene, on a residential street in the San Fernando Valley.
Connor Burks said he just moved in across the street from the house where the shooting happened.
"I definitely would want to be there for, whoever is still living over there and like maybe be there for them and stuff," Burks said.
