The first African slaves brought to America arrived in Winyah Bay, South Carolina, in 1526, led by Spaniard Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón. However, the first significant arrival of enslaved Africans to what is now the United States occurred on August 25, 1619, when a ship carrying enslaved Africans docked at Old Point Comfort, Virginia. This event is often marked as the beginning of slavery in the English colonies.
