Newly released body cam footage shows the fatal Sept. 3 officer-involved shooting that led to the death of 29-year-old Tyler Jacob Ben in Colorado Springs. Around 10:27 p.m., police officers found a stolen vehicle in the Walmart parking lot on East Platte Avenue. Working with two off-duty officers, they identified Ben and a female passenger. When the pair exited the store, officers commanded them to stop. The woman complied and was released without charges, but Ben did not and backed into the store. Officer Nicholas Cassalia, employed for nearly three years, fired several rounds, striking Ben. A loaded 9mm was found in Ben’s possession and despite officers' efforts to render aid, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
This was the second fatal shooting involving Cassalia this year. On May 18, he shot and killed Michael Ray Hurst Jr., 40, after Hurst, armed with a rifle, refused to comply with police commands. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is investigating both shootings.
