Full version of the Apollo 16 docking sequence with two views. View from the Command Module (CM) and view from the Lunar Module (LM). Keep in mind that shortly after launching from Earth, the Command Module turned around to extract the Lunar Module (Orion) from the rocket stage. At this moment, they were traveling at approximately 24,000 mph (38,600 km/h) relative to Earth. During the docking sequence, both spacecraft were traveling in a low lunar orbit at roughly 3,400 to 3,600 mph (5,500 to 5,800 km/h). If that's not impressive enough...Today, the International Space Station (ISS) is roughly 250 miles (400 km) from Earth, whereas the Moon sits at an average distance of 238,855 miles (384,400 km). In other words: The Moon is about 955 times farther away from Earth than the space station. They certainly were years ahead of us back in 1969-1972.
