Newport News police Officer Brian Torrez's nearly three-minute body cam captured the boy swearing repeatedly and admitting he stole his mother's loaded 9mm handgun, which he fired once at first-grade teacher Abigail Zwerner during reading class. The bullet tore through her hand into her chest, but she recovered after surgery while 16 students fled the room. Staff had warned administrators about the boy's aggression and possible gun earlier that day, yet no search happened; his mother served prison time for neglect, and Zwerner later won a $10 million civil verdict against the former assistant principal.
