Judge Qiana Lillard sentenced Donna Kosal to 93 days in jail for criminal contempt
after her family members laughed and mocked a victim's family during a sentencing hearing.
The Incident
• The Case:
Amanda Kosal was being sentenced in Wayne County Circuit Court (Michigan) to 3 to 15 years in prison for a drunken driving crash that killed 31-year-old Jerome Zirker and critically injured Brittany Johnson.
• The Disrespect:
While Jerome Zirker's sister gave an emotional victim impact statement,
Amanda’s mother (Donna Kosal) and her boyfriend smiled, giggled, and laughed in the back of the courtroom.
• The Reaction:
Judge Qiana Lillard stopped the proceedings, called the boyfriend a "clown," and ordered him out.
When Donna Kosal responded defiantly and talked back while leaving, the judge called her back and held her in direct criminal contempt.
• The Apology:
The next morning, Donna Kosal returned to the courtroom with appointed counsel, took responsibility, and gave a sincere apology citing stress and panic attacks.
• Sentence Reduced:
Judge Lillard accepted the apology and reduced the 93-day jail sentence to one day served, releasing her immediately.
