Lawrence police received several 911 calls on Monday night reporting gun shots on Farnham Street, according to the Essex County District Attorney's Office. Arriving officers found a 51-year-old man suffering from numerous gunshot wounds. He was later pronounced dead.
Elvin Joaquin Rodriguez, 26, was taken into custody on a warrant and later charged with murder. He is also facing charges of carrying a loaded firearm without a license and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building.
The district attorney's office identified the victim Tuesday afternoon as Alexis Rodriguez Martinez, the suspect's father.
A not guilty plea was entered on Rodriguez's behalf at his arraignment Tuesday in Lawrence District Court and he was ordered held without bail. His attorney did not object to the prosecution's bail request.
Neighbors who spoke with NBC10 Boston described hearing multiple gunshots Monday night.
"The first time I heard it, I said, 'It was no fireworks, that sounded like a shooting,'" one neighbor who lives next door said in Spanish.
William Moulton, another neighbor, said he heard what sounded like six shots.
Moulton said he would often see Rodriguez Martinez walking his dog across the street.
"It was a tragedy," Moulton said. "I don't know what goes through people's heads, to shoot somebody like that."
A family friend remembered Rodriguez Martinez as a good person and a hard worker.
News of the fatal shooting also rattled people living nearby.
"When something like this happens in the neighborhood, I think everybody — you know, this is where we live — and everybody wants to feel safe," one neighbor said.
Rodriguez is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause hearing on Oct. 22.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and is being conducted by Lawrence police, state police detectives assigned to the attorney general's office and the state medical examiner's office.
