Daytona Beach, Florida — Deputies received a tip about a couple being drunk and asleep in the sand. They found 27-year-olds Alyssia Langley and her fiance, Timothy Stephens passed out on the beach with several empty beer cans and an empty bottle of Crown Royal surrounding them. The couple had children’s toys around them, so when deputies were eventually able to wake the couple they asked where the children were, but they didn't seem to have a clue. At one point, the father calls out for the children at the water's edge. Deputies were able to determine their children, ages 5 and 7, were not in the ocean, but found them swimming in the pool of the hotel they were staying in. Stephens is not the biological father of the children, but Langley said he shares the responsibility of caring for them with her, therefore making him a legal guardian. The kids referred to him as “dad” and “other daddy.” Both Stephens and Langley were arrested and placed in handcuffs and began arguing with one another. At one point, Stephens runs away from the deputies and at least one chases after him. He runs a short distance before smacking into the sand and appearing to be unconscious. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation and released to the Volusia County jail hours after. Stephens faced charges of child neglect, alcohol possession and attempt to escape custody. Not knowing where the children are, not having the kids supervised is evil. Hope grandpa did not even try to bail out these idiots.. How the bitch was not accused of alcohol possession, only his miniature stud?

@howwonderfool Good god! I grew up on the beach, and the parents would drink and nap on their towels, we'd play, it was fine. Why society feels the need to coddle children 24/7 is beyond me, but the result can be seen on youtube and here, when these children grow up to be toddlers and throw fits in public.

@L.X I understand that, but isn't the situation is worse year by year, decade by decade. At least I feel that way.

And sure, as a kid, it was fun to fool around while the parents lived their lives, talked and drinked, "socialized", or just napped on the beach on a vacation - and you could just go for a swimming, a small trip alone or with some friends. But actually it was dangerous back then, and bit or more of a neglect on the parents' side.

Yet time flew by, and there are many more sexual predators, nutcases lurking around, and cars and weapons and thugs. Things that kill or scar children and families.

We sure felt ready to explore our surroundings, but even back then it could have cost our lives. Sometimes.

As for nowadays.. Odds are worse.

In this case - just like in many such cases - the kids actually "solved" the problem, and went with a safe, still fun option, playing in the hotel's swimming pool. But they could have droned, some predator or child trafficking gang might have kidnapped either them, or just run out to the highway to play frogger and fail.

The kids did good, for their age. The "mother" and step-"father" however..

Kids need protection, attention, observance, a loving home, food to eat, clothes, and education. And even with that bad things can happen. Leaving them alone, without monitoring them should not happen. Until (but even when) they come to an age, from when they truly can make mistakes, because that would be no or way less risk to a lethal experience. 5 and 7 years olds are far from that. And imo this doesn't change with the fact we as children, or these siblings could manage themselves.
