A video circulating online appears to show an ICE-related law enforcement operation in Indianapolis, but during the encounter, the conversation takes an unexpected turn from immigration enforcement to race.
During the exchange, a Black officer says he can hear immigrants calling him “n****r” with the hard R.
The officer tells them to stop, makes it clear that he can hear what is being said, and says he plans to publicize what he describes as racism toward Black people.
The video comes at a time when ICE enforcement has become one of the most heated issues across Indianapolis and the country, with immigrant-rights advocates pushing back against increased enforcement.
But this particular encounter brings another complicated conversation into the debate: the relationship between Black Americans and other minority and immigrant communities.
For generations, Black Americans fought civil rights battles that helped expand legal protections and opportunities far beyond the Black community.
At the same time, conversations about anti-Black racism within Latino and other immigrant communities have existed for decades.
