A suspension bridge in Indonesia collapsed shortly after its inauguration

The Pongpet hanging bridge in Margacinta Village, #Cijulang District, Pangandaran Regency, West #Java, suffered damage and collapsed during its inauguration by Pangandaran Regent Citra Pitriyami on Sunday (30/8/2026).

The incident occurred around 4:15 PM WIB when a group of officials and residents were crossing the bridge following the inauguration ceremony. Approximately 50 people were reportedly on the bridge at the same time, including Regent Citra Pitriyami, Head of the Public Works Department Ling Ling Nugraha Senjaya, and Pangandaran Military District Commander Lt. Col. Czi Citra Kurniawan.

As the group was crossing, one section of the binding construction or anchor is suspected to have broken, causing the bridge structure to suddenly collapse. Several reports suggest the condition was likely related to excessive load, while the exact cause still needs to be confirmed through technical examination.

Fortunately, the incident resulted in no fatalities. Several people were reported to have sustained minor injuries, while Regent Citra Pitriyami experienced temporary shock and bruising on her hand from being struck by a wire. Following the incident, the Regent's condition was reported as stable, and she has resumed normal activities.

The Pongpet Bridge spans approximately 60 meters in length and stands about 30 to 40 meters above the river surface. The bridge serves as a connecting access route for several areas and as a path to the Cultural Village of Margacinta.

Residents are urging the government to conduct a thorough inspection of the bridge's condition and construction before it is reopened to the public. To date, the exact cause of the damage remains under investigation and evaluation by relevant authorities.

@tommix1 Yeah, it does look like cowboy building "skills" rather than a resonant frequency issue since, despite the music, the people on the bridge were not "marching".

Although even the Romans army knew to break step when crossing bridges 2,000 years ago to prevent resonant frequencies building up, the knowledge seemed to have been lost by the 19th century (the Broughton Suspension Bridge collapse in 1831 in the UK) and more recently the "leading" engineering group Arup designed a pedestrian bridge over the Thames which had to be shut for 2 years after just 2 days use in 2000 because said design was so "pedestrian".
