This is the famous Spanish “Semana Santa” (Holy Week) penitential procession, particularly the tradition of carrying a large paso—a richly decorated platform bearing an image of Christ or the Virgin—through the streets, accompanied by candles, incense, music, and penitents. The practice developed from medieval Catholic penitential confraternities, especially during the 15th–16th centuries. The Council of Trent did not create the processions, but its reforms helped consolidate and expand them.

Today, some of Spain’s most famous celebrations are in Seville, Málaga, Valladolid, Zamora, León, Granada, Murcia, Lorca, Jerez de la Frontera, and Córdoba. Seville is especially renowned, with dozens of brotherhoods carrying elaborate pasos during Holy Week

I was in Málaga once during Holy Week at Easter and saw one of the nighttime processions with horses and torches—it was very mystical, beautiful, and artistic. But for me, as an atheist, it was just an interesting spectacle that you don’t see anywhere else. The funny thing was that there were various figurines for sale wearing those tall, pointed hats, and signs in the store windows that said “Not the KKK.” There are also plenty of photos of them online. We picked up a few figurines back then, and they’re now sitting in the living room between the flowerpots on the windowsill.
