Bookstores are reporting very suspicious orders they believe are linked to AI

 

One bookstore called Kenny’s Bookshop got an order 5,000 books, most of them very obscure and second hand

 

Many book dealers are now flagging orders like this after Anthropic by Claude ran an internal project called project Panama

 

Court documents from a copyright lawsuit revealed they bought millions of physical books in bulk, cut the spines off with industrial machines for high-speed scanning, digitized the pages for AI training data

 

After they were done with the books they just threw them away

 

So now when bookstores get orders like this, it’s very concerning

Scanning a book also preserves it digitally, and it's not like destroying a book, destroys all copies of it. Try to relax.
Even if some rare volume is lost, who gives a fuck, there's a good chance it was written by a shithead anyway.

If some company buys a book, uses it, and throws it away, what business is it of mine? There's a good chance there are other copies, and if there aren't, I still don't care.
Do you own a book? If so are you sharing it, or planning to destroy it? ...wait, don't answer that. I don't give a fuck.

That’s probably not the main issue when it comes to the dumbing down of society. Books don't really disappear; they get reprinted, they’re available digitally, and so on. What’s way, way worse is how social media is spreading disinformation.
