an overly packed elevator plummeting several floors to the ground inside a Russian high-rise, leaving four men with broken legs.

Authorities said the nightmare scenario unfolded in an apartment building in Makhachkala, Dagestan after nine passengers got inside the elevator — which was only permitted to carry six people.

Footage shows the elevator suddenly jolts down, violently knocking passengers into each other and pulling them onto the floor.
The elevator fell 50 feet from the fourth floor to the ground, officials said.

Emergency services quickly rushed to the scene and tended to the wounded — with four of the passengers sufferin broken legs, according to the region’s health ministry.
A criminal case has been opened by Russia’s Investigative Committee over the failure to meet safety requirements.

The fucked up thing is, it would be so easy to design and implement a braking system that would engage positively and automatically based on inertia, but I guess that's too easy.

@JobyFluorine That was probably engaged. Else they would be dead. It has a drag/velocity brake/sensor, when moving faster than it should it engages and slows it down.
