Nurse Uses Jiu-Jitsu to Take Down Attacker

A hero nurse who has spent more than a decade training in jiu-jitsu was forced to use his martial arts skills to overpower an "abusive" patient.

Shocking CCTV footage captured the moment registered nurse Daniel Nelson wrestled the man to the ground after the patient appeared to lash out at him. The clip was filmed in the early hours of the morning at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in Brisbane, Australia.

It shows Nelson escorting an intoxicated man out of the emergency department before the patient appears to turn on him. The man appears to throw an object at Nelson before charging at him and allegedly throwing several punches.
But the nurse quickly turns the tables, using his jiu-jitsu skills to overpower the man and wrestle him to the ground. Nelson then restrains him until security arrives to assist.

The nurse said the confrontation happened in an area where there was no visibility from staff or security. Sharing the footage online, he said: "This is what many people never see."
Nelson claimed the patient had been "spitting on the floor, abusing staff and generally behaving like an absolute grub" before being asked to leave. The nurse said he laughed about the incident because he was able to defend himself, but warned that another healthcare worker might not have been able to.
