"Shoot Me!" Man Armed With Knife Shot By New Mexico Officer

It’s been just over a month and a half since Benjamin Siegling was shot and wounded by an Albuquerque Police Department officer, after first running from police, then turning back towards police with a knife in his hand. On Thursday, the body cam footage of the shooting was shown in a press conference.

On the night of June 2, on Osuna right off I-25, Albuquerque police said Sergeant Paul Durham was on patrol when he noticed someone, later identified as Siegling, jaywalking. APD said Siegling gave a false identity before body cam footage shows him fleeing.

After a brief chase through nearby parking lots, video showed Seigling walking towards the officer with a knife, demanding to be shot. After the video showed him repeatedly refusing to drop the knife, Officer Durham opened fire, shooting Seigling once in the chest and once in the shoulder. He survived and was discharged from the University of New Mexico Hospital two weeks later, when he was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center. APD learned he had been recently discharged from parole and had two felony warrants for violating the terms of release related to shoplifting.

This shooting drew public scrutiny, as it was the fourth officer-involved shooting in a two-week span. In response, APD Chief Cecily Barker moved up the usual review process, usually only done every six months. “We did have the executive review of my staff; we are continuing to evaluate all of these officer-involved shootings,” she said during the press conference

So far, she said a common factor they’ve identified in many recent shootings is drugs, though in Siegling’s case, it’s unknown whether drugs were a factor. “We have noticed a trend that in these officer-involved shootings, more often than not they were under the influence of some kind of narcotic”

Siegling is facing charges of aggravated assault against a police officer, concealing identity, and resisting arrest.

It's a well known fact or at least it should be common sense that when a cop is pointing a gun at you while yelling "drop what's in your hand" you drop what's in your hand and don't go charging at the cop pointing a gun at you with whatever is in your hand or bad things will happen. (see video above)

The public then needs BETTER EDUCATION! Approach an officer with a knife...oh well, you asked for it!

@kma8675309 Anyone who will scrutinize this needs to be put in the exact same situation. If someone is marching towards me with a gun, I won't give them any warning. The Tueller Drill immediately comes to mind.
