Researchers at the University of Tokyo's Biohybrid Systems Laboratory cultured human skin cells in collagen gel and attached the living tissue to robot surfaces using tiny perforations and plasma treatment. This allows the skin to stretch realistically over 3D faces, self-heal small cuts through cell growth, and mimic human movements without bleeding. Professor Shoji Takeuchi's team, publishing in June 2024, aims for robots with added nerves and glands; applications include disaster-response bots and drug-testing models. While some raised Terminator alarms, the work focuses on practical benefits like tougher exteriors and humanlike sensing.

Doesn’t human skin already do this though to a certain extent? Stitches speed up the process obviously much faster and more effectively but most wounds wound close up on their own be it that they don’t get infected in the process of the healing / open skin. When humans often died from the wounds back in the day it was due to infections that would come on afterwards if the initial wound itself wasn’t fatal a one
