HOUSTON — A man was shot and killed by federal agents in Houston's East End on Tuesday morning, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.
They said it happened just before 7 a.m. near the intersection of Canal Street and Wayside Drive.
ICE spokesperson said officers were trying to pull over a vehicle as part of a "targeted enforcement operation to arrest an illegal alien."
They said the driver, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, tried to get away. ICE officials said Araujo is an immigrant from Mexico in the U.S. without proper documentation.
Investigators said Araujo rammed into an ICE vehicle and refused to follow orders. They also said he tried to "weaponize" his vehicle and run over an officer.
Federal officials said the officer opened fire during the incident, hitting Araujo.
He was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
People at the scene were visibly upset and crying.
The FBI is leading the investigation into what happened.
