Philly college student was fatally shot while chasing robbers who stole his phone

A manhunt is underway after a student at Pennsylvania State University was shot and killed on Saturday in a potential armed robbery attempt.

Billy Schmidt, 22, was blocks away from his home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Saturday at around 1:30 a.m. when he was shot and killed, according to the Philadelphia Police Department. When officers arrived, the college student was found on the street with a gunshot wound to his chest.

Police said Billy Schmidt was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead at 1:47 a.m.
Security video given to police shows Schmidt asking for his phone back before several shots were heard that killed the college student. It shows a man throwing a cellphone before another individual can be seen running around a corner being chased by Billy Schmidt, who was then shot in the chest.

Billy Schmidt was a senior at Pennsylvania State University, where he was set to graduate in December.

"He was a really good person who cared about everybody and never hurt or bothered a soul, never bothered anyone and for him to get shot like that is a travesty," Bill Schmidt said. "I'm shocked when they stole his phone that he chased them."

If someone steals your phone at gunpoint, you don't chase after them to get it back, that'll get you shot. What you do instead is purchase a handgun, get your concealed carry permit and hit the range. Sad this young man didn't make the right choice in this situation.

@L.X Move to a state with constitutional carry. Sometimes that's easier than getting a ccw.

Dude I know back in Maryland worked for his brother and regularly had $10k bank deposits for the after hours drop box. He tried for two years to get a ccw and after tons of boolshite he was finally denied.

Apparently Maryland would rather see you murdered and robbed than afford you a defensive weapon.

@L.X I have found in life the best M.O is to assume everyone is armed with at least a knife, it saves me from making poor decisions and especially from letting my temper override my better judgement, everyone should be made to watch theync and see how one quick cut or shot can end you in 20 seconds if not instantly. Makes you think twice about acting like life is a movie.

@insidatron Great point. I forgot to mention that pepper spray is your friend and can save you having to draw your weapon most of the time. But you're right, don't let them catch you slipping!
