CIA has conducted covert influence and deception operations abroad as part of intelligence and national security objectives throughout history. Just recently, during the 2026 rescue of a US F15E WSO inside Iran, US acknowledged that CIA used a deception or disinformation campaign as part of the recovery effort. CIA spread false information suggesting the missing WSO was located hundreds miles away from actual location and then later pushed the story that WSO have been found and was being extracted by ground even though he wasn't. It worked since it misdirected Iranian search efforts while US forces continued searching for and ultimately rescuing him.
