@L.X I think that OP is saying that at anytime she could have made some kind of attempt to get legal residency and possibly citizenship, which is true. I have known people that were here legally, had their visa or green card expire, but were still able to get legal temporary status and eventually citizenship.

The greatest thing that I have ever witnessed is seeing someone get sworn in as a brand new United States citizen, and watching them repeat the Pledge Of Allegiance for their very first time. That's some seriously moving shit. We take for granted what we have, and people are literally dying to come here and be us.

I feel privileged.
